What drives us?


Some alarming statistics:

  • At any given time, approximately 15% of children and youth in Canada experience mental health problems that inhibit healthy development1
  • Fewer than 20% of those children and youth receive treatment²
  • Poor mental health in Canadian school children poses a significant risk to their academic development and puts them at greater risk of dropping out of school, substance abuse and suicide²
  • In a recent local study, 20% of the young participants claimed little or no satisfaction in their relationship with school personnel ³

We want to change this.

In 2012 alone, we received 2272 calls from individuals requesting information either relating to our services, our referral service, or general information about the Center.

  1. FRC Begins

    Semptember 1999

    The Family Resource Center was founded in September 1999 and was incorporated.

  2. Not-for-profit status

    May 2000

    The Family Resource Center was given not-for-profit as well as registered charity status. Its initial mission was to provide support services – parent presentations and support groups, individual and family counseling, and school advocacy services – to parents and educators of children with learning disabilities, specifically Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.).

  3. Social Skills program


    A Social Skills program was developed based on parent requests and implemented for elementary school-aged children. The FRC began offering parental support groups and family counselling.

  4. Empathy program


    An Empathy Program pilot-project was established and implemented in three elementary schools; this program was later combined with the pre-existing Social Skills program.

  5. Expansion of support services


    The Family Resource Center expanded its support services to meet the needs of all children who were having academic and social difficulties – with or without diagnosis.

  6. Study skills progam


    A Study Skills program was developed to be implemented in elementary schools and was implemented at three schools

  7. Study skills program expands


    The Study Skills program kept growing. It was implemented in three schools: Merton Elementary, St-Raphael Elementary and Morin Heights Elementary.

  8. Social Skills program expands


    The Social Skills Programs is now implemented in four schools: Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary, George Vanier Elementary, Merton Elementary and Lauren Hill Academy.

  9. Social Skills program expands further


    The Social Skills Programs is now implemented in two schools: Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary and Terry Fox Elementary.

  10. Tools for Success program


    The Center enlarged its mandate by piloting The Tools for Success Program which offers mentorship to individuals ages 18-25. This program has become a successful ongoing service at the Family Resource Center.

  11. Girls Empowerment Project


    The FRC in conjunction with the West Island YWCA established the Girls Empowerment Project. Our goals for the project is to support girls to become critical thinking, creative women.

  12. Grant for SNAP program


    The Family Resource Center received a 5-year grant from the Department of Public Security’s crime prevention initiative in order to introduce the Stop Now And Plan (SNAP) program to the West Island community

  13. Beyond Program


    The Center developed our two transition programs which support elementary aged students going into high school and our High School & Beyond program supports our students with their options.

Parents benefit from coaching, conflict resolution tactics and most importantly myriad of questions related to their ADD child especially as they navigate through the maze of a learning disability. Imagine the panic when you receive a call from the school telling you that your child needs to be referred to a psychologist. This is the first in many hurdles a parent  endures; the Family Resource Center has helped us decode it all; behavior  and learning assessment coding, individualized educational plans, strategies for dealing with school professionals who are well-intentioned, but untrained and over-burdened, etc.”

 “Finding the Family Resource Center was the first ray of hope we had had for a long time. That hope came by the way we were treated, starting with the first phone call, setting up contracts with us, met with the whole family to help us understand what we were dealing with and how they can help Robert. It was clear from the beginning that this was a family affair, and that Robert was an adult and her work would be directly with him but she would also work with us to give us support and understanding, both of which was badly needed. One important element was the ability of Ms. Goldberg to recognize Rob’s ADHD behavior and use it as a teaching tool for us, as parents, who needed to learn about Robert’s disability and his way of dealing with it. Robert’s life has improved, he has a job and has kept in for a year, is coping better generally, sees his daughter every other week and continues to know that all he has to do is call the Family Resource Center who will always be there for him. We support the following work that the Family Resource Center offers among others:

  • Social Skills Development is offered to children ages 5-25. Their interactive programs teach such skills as organization, friendship, time management, conflict resolution, decision making and group skills.
  • Study Skills offers an effective interactive program to teach participants how to organize, manage their time, study, do projects, take notes and do tests.
  • Individual and Family Counseling which enables families to discuss their concerns in a secure and confidential environment.

Noticeably, children to the 5-25 ages, suffering from learning disabilities and mental health problems, require specialized services and this organization offers services geared towards helping children overcome these disabilities thereby giving them the tools to interact with their peers instead being excluded and marginalized. Without such services many of these youth are at risk which may lead to criminal behavior.

Moreover, the organization also offers parenting skill and workshops aimed in helping parents’ in dealing with special needs children which is, to us, a well rounded approach to helping these youth at risk.

Our station is pleased to be in partnership with the Family Resource Center. We believe that this organization is essential for the families and children with special needs living in the Pierrefonds-Roxboro community.”
